Georgian Bay

Georgian Bay is northeast of Lake Huron, above the Great Lakes.
Our 168 mile trip on the small craft route wound us through the 30,000 islands of Georgian Bay from Port Severn to Killarney.
Truly the finest cruising and most pristine anchorages.  Our 7 nights of anchoring were fabulous!

The most striking feature of the Georgian Bay is its topography.
Land both above and below water consists mostly of granite outcroppings.

With 30,000 islands to choose from, we wonder how the Canadians decide where to build their summer cottages!

Boats are not the ONLY mode of transportation between these reomote islands.

Imagine our surprise when we found Aurora in a lovely little anchorage on our second day in Georgian Bay!
They were traveling with Kent & Jane on Carina and they all invited Spiritus to join their flotilla.

Captain Eddy started a ferry service from our anchored boats to shore so we could explore.

The water was crystal clear and we could easily see all the way to the bottom for at least 12 feet.

The granite rock formations remind us of how long mother earth has been in transition.
Created by glaciers, many of these rocks are more than three billion years old.

"GREEN" graffiti shows we were here before we rowed back to Spiritus for docktails!

Another beautiful ending of an amazing day on the pristine Georgian Bay.

The next morning we look back at lovely "Friendship Cove" & wonder what is ahead.
To our delight, the upcoming anchorages we enjoyed with Aurora & Carina just kept getting better!

Watching Carina negotiate a narrow passage with an oncoming cruiser.

There is a reason from all these channel markers!

So fellow boaters, how do you negotiate these markers??!!

The granite outcroppings have started to look like versions of Mount Rushmore!

After anchoring in a secluded cove, the First Mate with "docktails" in hand, is ready to go ashore to play!
(The water looks so inviting to swim in but it's too cold for this Florida girl!)

Captain Eddy radios our position to our friendly flotilla who will join us at anchor!

The flotilla arrives and the ferrying begins.....

Jane & Kent, from Carina, in their collapsible dinghy.  Roll Tide!!!

The magnificent sunset promises another splendid day of cruising.
Feeling grateful for such delightful weather at our Georgian Bay anchorages.

As we cruise further northwest on the Georgian Bay, the First Mate says, "This looks like the moon".

And as we cruise this wonderland, we are always anticipating what is around the next bend.

The choices of anchorages is almost overwhelming!
At this spot, Spiritus finds that her steadying sail keeps her from swinging so much while "on the hook".

Who would have guessed that at this anchorage we would go ashore and pick fresh blueberries . . . . .

. . . . . . and the Captain would make blueberry pancakes the next morning?!  YUM!!

Undoubtedly, the cruising in the Georgian Bay has been our favorite on the Great Loop . . . .

. . . . and the pristine, tranquil anchorages have been our favorites to date!!

  1. Beautiful pictures of Georgian Bay.
With 30,000 islands to explore, it might take a lifetime to see it all.
Tough job, but someones got to do it, lol.
    Enjoy your journey.
