Northeast Lake Michigan

The sun begins to peek over Mackinac Island as we depart St Ignace.

The Mackinac Bridge is soooooo big you can see it from a lonnnnnggg way off!

Looking back over our shoulder at the sunrise after passing under the Mackinac Bridge.

Approaching the seawall of the Petoskey Marina in Little Traverse Bay, Michigan.

Once a lumber and manufacturing city in the late 1800s, Petoskey is now a waterfront community known for its charming downtown, historic architecture, scenic beauty, waterfront parks and sandy beaches.

The marina is located right next to Bayfront Park,

A pedestrian tunnel and ramp connects the marina with the downtown amenities.

Seemingly, like everywhere else in northern Michigan, colorful flowers abound!

The marina had wonderful bikes for us to use.  We took a long ride on the Little Traverse Wheelway, a non-motorized, asphalt path, which follows the shoreline for 26 miles.

Unique places to wet your whistle are all along the Wheelway, like the Knot Just a Bar in Bayview.
We sampled some local brews on tap and their famous Knotchos!

The Township of Leland, or "Fishtown", was another of our overnight stops along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
Ancient ice and fish shanties now house an operating fish house and specialty shops.

Despite the gloomy, rainy sky, the ever-present colorful flower boxes brightened up our day!

The amazing sand dunes of the Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Park.

With 480 foot tall sand dunes, white beaches and a backdrop of forests, the view from Spiritus is simply breathtaking.

The breakwater lighthouse at the entrance to Frankfort.

Spiritus and her traveling companion, Pazza Bella, settled at the dock in Frankfort.

Some of the beautiful, restored buildings of downtown.

Mike & Veronica from Pazza Bella, have a meal with us at "The Dinghy" in downtown Frankfort.

The great checker match begins!!!

Bottoms Up!

Bet you thought it was a duck!

St Ignace and Mackinac Island

After an uneventful but, most importantly, smooth crossing over Lake Huron, Spiritus rests for two days in St Ignace, Michigan.

The water here is incredibly clear!
These photos are taken from our boat, looking into the water beside Spiritus.
The depth is 12 feet and that is "seaweed" growing on the lake bottom.

A great blues band entertains a crowd on "Rock the Dock" night!

The marina flower beds were beautiful!

In the early morning hours after arriving in St Ignace, we excitedly boarded a jet boat ferry (like this one) for a 15 minute ride to Mackinac Island.

Main Street when we arrived at the island was just waking up . . . . . .

. . . . . . but by the time we finished breakfast it was wide awake!

There are no motor vehicles allowed on the island.
Everything is transported by horse drawn carts, wagons, bicycles, or on foot!

Upon some "local's" recommendation, we had a scrumptuous breakfast at Pancake House.
Can you guess why Linda thought this was the "coolest" window sign?

The Grand Hotel sits high on the bluffs overlooking Mackinac Island and Mackinac Bridge.

The hotel was a project of two Michigan railroads and was opened in July of 1887.

The hotel's porch is the world's longest, stretching 880 feet!
That's almost the length of 3 football fields!

That's Linda waving from the "upper deck" of the hotel's parking lot!
No cars, just bikes!  Hundreds of them!

This one is easier to park!

The Arch.  That water looks like the Carribean, doesn't it?

A view of Fort Mackinac from the north . . . . . .

 . . . . . . and a view from the south.

Did you . . . . . .

. . . . . . know that . . . . . .

. . . . . . fudge shops . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . give . . . . . .

. . . . . . away . . . . . . .

. . . . . . free samples?

It's hard to believe that every yard was adorned with such beautiful flowers!

As the following pictures show, colorful flowers were always in sight!

This quaint looking building is Mackinac Island's Post Office.
It is the only U.S. Post Office that has never delivered a single piece of mail!
Come rain, snow, sleet, or dark of night, you have to go there and pick it up yourself (by foot or bicycle!)

As the sun sets beyond the Mackinac Bridge, we board the ferry to return to St Ignace.
Our faces have the biggest grins as we reflect on the most fabulous day on Mackinac Island!
